Wordoku: How Letter Sudoku Works and How to Solve It

Wordoku replaces the digits 1 through 9 with nine different letters. The symbols change, but the underlying Sudoku logic stays exactly the same.

Treat the letters as symbols, not as language

A standard Wordoku uses a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 boxes. Instead of the digits 1 through 9, it uses nine distinct letters, and every row, column, and box must contain each letter exactly once. The letters sometimes form a hidden word or phrase after the puzzle is complete, but that theme is not part of the solving logic unless the puzzle explicitly says otherwise. You do not need vocabulary knowledge, spelling guesses, or anagram skill. If the available symbols are A, C, E, L, M, R, S, T, and U, simply treat them as nine labels. Build a fixed symbol order for scanning and Notes

Numbers come with a natural order from 1 to 9, but a random set of letters does not. Create a fixed order before solving. Alphabetical order is usually easiest. When checking a row, scan for A first, then C, then E, and continue through the same sequence every time. This prevents one letter from being forgotten simply because it does not feel visually important. Candidate Notes also benefit from consistency. On paper, assign each letter a fixed miniature position inside the cell, just as many solvers place digits in a 3x3 candidate layout. On screen, use whatever candidate system the puzzle provides, but keep the same mental order. Use every normal Sudoku technique without modification

Naked singles, hidden singles, pairs, triples, pointing pairs, X-Wings, chains, and other Sudoku techniques work in Wordoku exactly as they do with digits. A naked pair containing A and T is logically identical to a naked pair containing 2 and 7. An X-Wing on the letter M behaves exactly like an X-Wing on the digit 5. The difficulty comes only from symbol recognition, not from new mathematics. If the puzzle reveals a final word, resist using that word to force uncertain placements unless the rules explicitly make the word part of the constraint. Doing so turns a logic puzzle into a spelling guess and can hide mistakes. Instead, complete the Sudoku normally and treat the final word as a check or small reward.
