Sudoku vs Suguru: Which Number Logic Puzzle Fits You
Sudoku and Suguru both place symbols into cells, but they organize the grid in very different ways. One uses fixed rows, columns, and boxes; the other uses irregular regions and close-range adjacency.
Sudoku builds logic from three overlapping unit types
Classic Sudoku uses a 9x9 grid divided into nine rows, nine columns, and nine 3x3 boxes. Every one of those units must contain the symbols 1 through 9 exactly once. The digits do not act as quantities, so arithmetic is unnecessary. You solve by asking where a missing symbol can still appear and by removing candidates that conflict with placements in the same row, column, or box. Easy puzzles may fall to scanning and singles, while harder ones introduce pairs, locked candidates, fish patterns, wings, and chains. Suguru replaces rows and boxes with irregular regions and neighbors
Suguru, also known as Tectonic or Number Blocks, divides the grid into irregular regions. A region containing N cells must use the digits 1 through N exactly once. A three-cell region therefore contains 1, 2, and 3, while a five-cell region contains 1 through 5. The second rule reaches beyond the region borders: two identical digits may not touch horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. This creates an eight-cell exclusion zone around every placement. Unlike Sudoku, a row or column does not need to contain a particular complete set. The important structures are the region containing a cell and the neighboring cells surrounding it. If a 4 is placed, every touching cell loses 4 even when it belongs to another region. If a region still needs 2 and only one of its unsolved cells can use 2 after those neighbor exclusions, that cell is forced. Suguru therefore combines small set completion with very local spatial pressure.
Use the same candidate discipline in two different geometries
The strongest connection between the puzzles is candidate discipline. In Sudoku, a candidate survives only if its row, column, and box allow it. In Suguru, a candidate survives only if it belongs to the correct range for its region, is not already used in that region, and does not match any touching cell. Pairs and subsets can appear in both games. If two cells in one Suguru region are the only places for 2 and 4, those values are reserved there just as a Sudoku pair reserves two symbols inside a unit. The difference is what happens outside the set. Sudoku spreads information along whole rows, columns, and boxes, while Suguru often spreads information one cell outward in every direction. Choose Sudoku when you like long-range interactions and a deep library of named techniques. Choose Suguru when compact regions and neighborhood patterns feel more natural.
