Sudoku vs Slitherlink: Grid Logic and Loop Logic Compared

Sudoku solves the contents of cells
Sudoku asks you to fill a grid so every row, column, and 3x3 box contains each of nine symbols exactly once. Each decision concerns the value of a cell. The same symbol cannot repeat in any unit, so placed values remove candidates from many peers and gradually reveal singles, subsets, fish patterns, and chains. Shapedoku follows these exact rules with nine glowing shapes instead of numbers, which makes it clear that arithmetic is irrelevant. The logic comes from membership: which symbol belongs in this cell, and where else can that symbol appear in the same units? Notes are useful because one empty cell can have several legal candidates. The board becomes more informative as those sets shrink. Sudoku is therefore a strong fit for players who enjoy classification, elimination, and repeated scans through a stable set of row, column, and box relationships.
Slitherlink solves the edges between cells
Slitherlink usually begins with numbers written inside some cells of a rectangular grid. You draw line segments along the grid edges until they form one single closed loop with no branches and no separate smaller loops. A clue tells you how many of the four edges around that cell belong to the loop. A 0 forbids all four surrounding edges. A 3 requires three of them. A 1 or 2 gives less immediate information but becomes powerful when neighboring clues interact. At each grid point, the final loop must either pass through using two incident line segments or avoid that point entirely. It cannot arrive and stop, and it cannot branch into three directions. Much of Slitherlink solving therefore involves marking both confirmed lines and confirmed non-lines. The puzzle is less about assigning values and more about controlling connectivity while satisfying local edge counts.
Compare local clues with global structure
Both puzzles reward deductions that begin locally and become global, but they do it in different ways. In Sudoku, a small pair inside one box may remove candidates from a crossing row and eventually force a distant placement. In Slitherlink, a numbered clue may determine one edge, which changes the possibilities at a neighboring vertex and eventually affects whether the entire loop can stay connected. Slitherlink also has a distinctive global danger: you must not close a smaller loop before all required edges are included. Sudoku has no direct equivalent because its solution is a complete arrangement rather than one connected object.
