Sudoku vs Masyu: Cell Logic and Loop Logic Compared
Sudoku determines the contents of cells. Masyu determines the route of one continuous loop, using black and white pearls to control how that loop moves.
Sudoku solves values inside a fixed grid structure
Sudoku begins with a 9x9 grid whose rows, columns, and 3x3 boxes are fixed from the start. Every unit must eventually contain all nine symbols exactly once. Solving is a process of narrowing possibilities. A placement removes the same symbol from its peers, a pair can reserve two values inside one unit, and harder patterns can link candidates across distant parts of the grid. Masyu builds one loop through black and white pearls
Masyu is a loop puzzle rather than a value-placement puzzle. You draw a single closed loop through the centers of cells using horizontal and vertical segments. The loop cannot branch, cross itself, or pass through the same cell twice. Every pearl must lie on the loop. At a white pearl, the loop passes straight through the pearl cell and must make a right-angle turn in at least one of the immediately neighboring cells along that straight section. At a black pearl, the loop turns at the pearl and then travels straight through the next cell on both sides of that turn. Those two pearl rules create most early deductions. A black pearl near an edge may have only one possible turn orientation. A white pearl near another forced segment may be forced horizontal or vertical. Every new line segment also restricts how the single loop can eventually connect.
Masyu replaces candidates with possible paths
The useful parallel is that both puzzles preserve uncertainty until a constraint removes it. In Sudoku, a cell might contain heart or crescent. In Masyu, a pearl or ordinary cell might support two possible directions for the loop. You should keep both possibilities until the pearl rules, grid edge, or global loop structure removes one. Avoid closing a small loop while unused pearls remain outside it, just as you avoid making a Sudoku placement without proof. Masyu also rewards looking one step beyond a clue. A black pearl controls not only its own turn but the straight cells immediately after it; a white pearl controls its own straight passage and requires a nearby turn.
