Sudoku uses three families of complete sets. Every row, column, and 3x3 box must contain the nine symbols exactly once. Dominosa starts with a rectangular grid already filled with numbers. You do not change those numbers. Instead, you divide the grid into orthogonally adjacent pairs representing dominoes. For a puzzle using values 0 through N, every possible unordered pair from 0-0 through N-N must appear exactly once. That means a pair such as 2-5 can be used only one time anywhere on the board. The numbers therefore identify tile types, while the unknown information is which neighboring cells belong together. A useful first scan looks for a domino pair that occurs in only one adjacent location. If 0-0 appears side by side only once, that boundary is forced. Once a cell is paired, all its other neighboring boundaries are forbidden. Unique-pair logic then cascades because using one 2-5 eliminates every other possible 2-5 adjacency elsewhere.

Choose Sudoku vs Dominosa by whether tiling logic appeals

Sudoku vs Dominosa shares the idea that uniqueness can force a location, but the objects are different. Sudoku reserves values inside units. Dominosa reserves adjacency pairs across the entire grid. Dominosa gets significantly easier when you track possibilities by domino type as well as by cell. For every unordered pair, mark each adjacent occurrence that could still represent it. A type with one occurrence is forced; a type with two occurrences forms a useful either-or relationship. Also inspect cells with only one available neighbor, because they must pair across that boundary regardless of the values involved. After fixing a domino, cross out every competing boundary touching its two cells and every other occurrence of the same number pair. These two kinds of elimination often cascade together. On harder boards, look for small regions whose cells can only be tiled internally; if the number of available domino boundaries cannot cover the region without crossing its edge, at least one outward pairing is forced. Do not overlook double dominoes such as 3-3. They can occur only where equal values touch, so they often have far fewer candidate locations than mixed pairs and make excellent opening targets.
