16x16 Sudoku and Hexadoku: Rules and Solving Strategy

A 16x16 Sudoku expands the classic structure to sixteen symbols, sixteen rows, sixteen columns, and sixteen 4x4 boxes.

Understand the larger grid without adding new mathematics

A standard 16x16 Sudoku, often called Hexadoku, follows the same basic idea as a 9x9 Sudoku. The board has sixteen rows and sixteen columns, divided into sixteen 4x4 boxes. Every row, column, and box must contain each of the sixteen symbols exactly once. Publishers use different symbol sets. Some use 1 through 16, while others use digits and letters such as 0 through 9 plus A through F. The symbols are labels, not quantities, so you do not need hexadecimal arithmetic to solve a Hexadoku. The main challenge is visual scale. A unit contains sixteen positions instead of nine, so it takes longer to remember what is missing and easier to overlook one candidate. This is conceptually similar to Shapedoku, where nine glowing shapes replace digits without changing classic Sudoku logic. In both cases, solving becomes easier once you stop translating the symbols and treat each one as a distinct token that must appear once per unit.

Create a fixed symbol order before you start scanning

Large grids punish random scanning. Write or memorize the complete symbol set in one fixed order and use that order every time you check a row, column, or box. If the puzzle uses 0 through 9 and A through F, scan in that sequence rather than jumping toward whichever letter catches your eye. Begin with the most complete units. A row with thirteen placed symbols has only three missing values and is far easier to process than a row with seven. The 4x4 boxes are especially useful because their larger shape creates many intersections with rows and columns. Use crosshatching exactly as in ordinary Sudoku: follow one symbol through nearby rows or columns and determine where it can still fit inside a box. Because each band contains four boxes rather than three, complete scans take longer, so use a consistent direction and finish one symbol before switching. This keeps the board from turning into sixteen different half-finished searches.

Manage candidates in layers rather than filling everything at once

Full candidate notation on a 16x16 board can become crowded quickly. Start with direct singles and compact marks in the most constrained units. When a row, column, or box is missing only a few symbols, list those possibilities and compare the crossing units. Expand to fuller candidates only where the puzzle stops moving. Naked pairs, triples, and larger subsets work exactly as they do in 9x9 Sudoku, but larger units can support larger locked sets, so counting matters. If four cells in one row contain candidates drawn from exactly four symbols, those symbols are reserved for those cells and can be removed elsewhere in the row. Box-line interactions also remain powerful. A symbol confined to one row within a 4x4 box can be removed from the rest of that row outside the box. Take breaks during long solves rather than letting candidate accuracy decay. A useful training approach is to practice clean Notes on Hard or Extreme Shapedoku first, where the same candidate habits appear on a smaller 9x9 canvas. The techniques transfer even though the Hexadoku board demands more visual bookkeeping.

  1. Confirm the exact sixteen symbols used by the puzzle and write them in a fixed order.
  2. Treat every row, column, and 4x4 box as a unit containing all sixteen symbols once.
  3. Start with units that already contain the most placed symbols.
  4. Use crosshatching one symbol at a time across the larger bands and stacks.
  5. Add candidates gradually and search for subsets only after the basic scans are complete.
  6. Recheck candidate accuracy often because one missed symbol can hide progress across a very large unit.
