Center Dot Sudoku adds one clean visual rule to classic Sudoku: the center cell of every 3x3 box belongs to an extra nine-cell region that must contain 1 through 9 once.
Center Dot Sudoku turns nine box centers into one unit
Center Dot Sudoku follows the normal 9x9 rules first. Every row, every column, and every 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. The extra rule is easy to locate: take the center cell of each of the nine standard boxes. Those nine cells, often marked with dots or another visual cue, form an additional region that must also contain 1 through 9 once each. Because there is exactly one center-dot cell in every ordinary box, the special unit touches the entire grid in a very regular way. Start by reading the center-dot cells as a separate house. If the marked cells already contain 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 9, then only 3, 6, and 8 remain for the other three marked cells. Their normal row and column restrictions may immediately decide one or more of them. The reverse is equally useful: when a row forces a value into its center-dot cell, that value disappears from all eight other marked centers, even though most are far away.
Use Center Dot Sudoku to link distant boxes
The extra region makes Center Dot Sudoku especially good at transmitting information between boxes that would otherwise have little direct interaction. Imagine candidate 6 is possible in only two center-dot cells. Those two cells now form a strong positional relationship inside the extra unit. If one is removed by its column, the other is forced. You can also find naked and hidden subsets among the nine centers. Three marked cells restricted to 2, 5, and 8 reserve those digits for the trio and remove them from the remaining center-dot cells. Then inspect the ordinary boxes containing those cells. Removing one candidate from a box center can be surprisingly important because the center sees four orthogonal neighbors, four diagonal neighbors, its whole row, its whole column, and the rest of its box through standard Sudoku structure. On Hard or Extreme puzzles, keep full Notes so the extra unit stays current. Shapedoku players can use the same discipline: a heart, crystal, or lotus is simply a symbol in a complete set, so subset logic works exactly as it does with digits.
Build a reliable Center Dot Sudoku scan cycle
A steady scan cycle prevents the special region from becoming an afterthought. First solve all obvious classic singles. Next scan the center-dot unit from 1 through 9 and note which marked cells remain possible for each digit. Then return to the nine boxes and ask whether the new restrictions created box singles or pairs. Finally sweep rows and columns that contain recently changed center dots. Repeat after every meaningful placement. Avoid inventing extra rules from the visual pattern. The nine centers do not have to sum to a special value in a particular arrangement, and neighboring centers do not need consecutive digits. The only added requirement is uniqueness across the nine marked cells. That makes Center Dot Sudoku approachable but not trivial. On an easier puzzle, the extra house often provides direct singles. On a harder one, it produces long-range candidate relationships that become useful only after several ordinary deductions. If you are comfortable scanning classic Sudoku systematically, the main adjustment is simply remembering that every marked center belongs to four units instead of the usual three.
