6x6 Sudoku compresses the familiar logic into six symbols and smaller boxes, making it a useful bridge between mini Sudoku and the classic 9x9 grid.

Learn the 6x6 grid and its box shape

A 6x6 Sudoku contains six rows and six columns. Each row and column must contain the symbols 1 through 6 exactly once. The grid is also divided into six regions of six cells each. The most common layout uses boxes that are 2 rows high and 3 columns wide, although some publishers rotate them into 3 by 2 boxes. Always follow the printed borders rather than assuming one orientation. Each box must also contain 1 through 6 once. The basic logic is therefore identical to 9x9 Sudoku, only with fewer symbols and smaller units. Shapedoku itself uses the full 9x9 structure with nine glowing shapes, but 6x6 Sudoku can be a useful training format for anyone who wants to practice scanning, candidates, and box interactions in a shorter puzzle. The reduced grid does not make every puzzle trivial. A well-designed 6x6 can still require careful pairs, locked candidates, and multi-step deductions.

Use the smaller boxes to scan aggressively

Because each unit contains only six symbols, missing-value lists stay compact. Start with rows, columns, or boxes that already contain four or five placed digits. If a row contains 1, 2, 4, and 6, its two empty cells must be 3 and 5. Crossing columns may immediately decide the order. Boxes are especially efficient because a 2 by 3 region has only six cells. Scan one digit through a band of boxes and use existing placements to eliminate entire rows or columns inside a box. This is the same crosshatching logic used in 9x9 Sudoku, but the smaller geometry makes the consequences easier to see. Do not rush just because the puzzle is compact. A wrong placement contaminates a larger percentage of the grid, so verify every final entry against its row, column, and box. If direct singles stop working, add candidates to the most constrained units rather than filling every empty cell immediately.

Practice subsets before moving back to 9x9 Sudoku

Six-cell units make pairs and triples easier to recognize. If two cells in one row contain only 2 and 5, those digits are locked into the pair and can be removed from the other four cells in that row. A hidden pair works the same way when two digits appear only in the same two cells, even if those cells currently contain extra candidates. Pointing and claiming patterns also appear naturally where a 2 by 3 box intersects rows and columns. These techniques are valuable because they transfer directly to standard 9x9 Sudoku and to Shapedoku, where numbers are simply replaced by nine shapes. Use 6x6 grids to practice a clean solving rhythm: scan for singles, update candidates, look for pairs and box-line restrictions, then rescan. If you find yourself guessing, step back and ask which unit has the fewest unresolved possibilities. The smaller board usually contains a logical route, and learning to find it builds habits that remain useful when the grid grows to 81 cells.

  1. Confirm whether the boxes are 2 by 3 or 3 by 2 before solving.
  2. List the missing digits in the most complete rows, columns, and boxes first.
  3. Use crossing units to turn two-candidate cells into exact placements.
  4. Look for naked and hidden pairs when direct singles stop appearing.
  5. Use box-line interactions just as you would in a 9x9 Sudoku.
  6. Treat 6x6 puzzles as practice for clean logic rather than as puzzles that should be rushed.
